2019 Moderator Election

On Stack Exchange, we believe the core moderators should come from the community, and be elected by the community itself through popular vote. We hold regular elections to determine who these community moderators will be.

Community moderators are accorded the highest level of privilege on our community, and should themselves be exemplars of positive behavior and leaders within the community.

Our general criteria for moderators is as follows:

  • patient and fair
  • leads by example
  • shows respect for their fellow community members in their actions and words
  • open to some light but firm moderation to keep the community on track and resolve (hopefully) uncommon disputes and exceptions

Every election has three phases:

  1. Nomination
  2. Primary
  3. Election

Please participate in the moderator elections by voting, and perhaps even by nominating yourself to be a community moderator!

This election ended Jun 25 '19 at 20:00.

The results of this election can be viewed online via OpaVote. Anyone may download the election data. Voters have access to pre-built OpenSTV software to audit the results; all others may use this source distribution.

1,754 voters were eligible, 734 visited the site during the election, 493 visited the election page, and 223 voted

Greetings, my name is ElizB and I'd like to nominate myself for the 2019 IPS election. I was uncertain to put myself in this position because I felt there were people more experienced than myself, but I still felt I wanted to do what I could for this wonderful community I have found a family in. I am from north-east United States. I am also a co-room owner in the chat.

My personal view on moderation is that it is a huge responsibility to represent the community. I promise to try my best and work together with the community and the other moderators to come to a fair decision.

I have answered the community questionnaire.

Why not me?

  • I am not as experienced, as shown by my reputation score
  • I know I have not contributed to Meta as much in the past. I promise I will contribute more, regardless of becoming a moderator.

Why me?

  • I can relate to and understand people that are experiencing oppression and difficulties, because I am Deaf in real life. I want to help make this community more open and accessible for all visitors and members.
  • I prefer having open and transparent communication
  • I already said the same thing about avazula and Rainbacon, but I know you, I know how you moderate and how much you care and I know you would make a fantastic mod :) – Ael Jun 17 '19 at 13:29

Hello, IPS

I have been here since the start, working to help build the community along with a great team of active users. I have raised probably the most number of helpful flags, become an all time top reviewer, top editor, frequent voter, earned a lot of badges, and I've been an active presence on the IPS meta site for a very long time.

Overall, I have been using stack exchange without signing up for many years, and then signed up and started actively posting on the network starting with ELU 6 years ago, mastered the review queues, and frequented meta discussions.

As a mod, I'll be able to better help moderate the community with the special moderator tools I'll be provided. And I hope that I am considered as a suitable candidate to join the IPS moderation team.

Here's my answer to the questionnaire

  • You haven't been active on IPS besides a few incidental reviews for the past year or so, it seems. I don't see you comment on main to help moderate questions or answer or guide new users, I can't remember your last meta post (or post on main), and I don't think I can remember your name in a list of close-voters on questions either recently. I do know you as being a bit power hungry though, from times when the chatroom just had new room owners and you kept pushing for being RO too. I must say this nomination looks strange in light of that. – Tinkeringbell Jun 16 '19 at 11:25
  • How up to date are you with current moderation practices on IPS? Why haven't you put in more effort continuously? Can the moderation team rely on you taking on an equal share of the work? Why the sudden return? I also remember you once becoming way too personal with me, can I rest assured such a thing won't happen again? – Tinkeringbell Jun 16 '19 at 11:25
  • @Tinkeringbell Power hungry? I'm confused. I don't recall being personal with you, other than considering you a friend on IPS - and that confusion I don't want to let happen again. – NVZ Jun 16 '19 at 11:44
  • @Tinkeringbell I am up to date on IPS, albeit a bit less frequent in recent months, due to personal health and work reasons. But you may rest assured I can take on the share of moderation work required of me. – NVZ Jun 16 '19 at 11:49
  • How can I (and other mods) be sure that's not an empty promise, having seen nothing to prove that you will do you share of moderation work? No flags, no comments, no posts on meta or main... You'll have to do better than just saying 'rest assured' to convince me. Why the sudden nomination after all this radio silence? Why are you downplaying things (recent months = a year, if not more, less frequent = almost nill)? Why is your nomination dishonest about your activity on IPS, claiming you've been here since the start in your first paragraph isn't all that honest with such a long hiatus. – Tinkeringbell Jun 16 '19 at 11:53
  • @Tinkeringbell I know you mean well, but calling a candidate power hungry isn't very nice I must mention. Back in the days when we a handful of users filled the chat rooms, it was a simple thing to want to be a RO of it, and it literally makes no sense to call it power hungry. Hope you remember who motivated you to stick around the site and join the review queues and all, which eventually led to your becoming a mod and so on. I have never done anything wrong to deserve a "power hungry" label. I'm very disheartened. – NVZ Jun 16 '19 at 11:58
  • @Tinkeringbell Sudden nomination? I did nominate myself in the earlier calls for nominations as well, even the very earliest ones. – NVZ Jun 16 '19 at 12:02
  • @Tinkeringbell Quite honestly, I have been here since the start. I was one of those who showed you the ropes, wasn't I? – NVZ Jun 16 '19 at 12:03
  • You definitely missed one chance to nominate, probably due to your prolonged absence from IPS. Which leaves exactly 1 nomination from before you dropped off the radar, which again shows you're overselling your own activity by using plural verbs in that comment. You may have been active in the early days of IPS, but that's different from claiming that you kept up the same level of activity until the present day, which you clearly didn't, which makes this nomination sudden. – Tinkeringbell Jun 16 '19 at 12:10
  • As for your claims of showing me the ropes and motivating me to stick around: Please don't flatter yourself. If my memory serves correctly, I had to take a break from IPS after you unrightfully pushed a claim of friendship on me that wasn't there, and my return here wasn't because of you. As for the power hungry, if that offended you, you have my apologies. It's just the best description I could think of for the combination of behaviour in chat regarding Room Ownership and your sudden nomination here. I'll see if there are better descriptors out there. – Tinkeringbell Jun 16 '19 at 12:12
  • @Tinkeringbell I suppose in your view calling someone who I have chatted with a lot online an online friend is a bad thing, while it's okay for you to call me power hungry for just volunteering or wanting to be an RO. For the record, being an RO does not give one much power. Simple things, you take in the wrong sense, I fear. – NVZ Jun 16 '19 at 12:15
  • @Tinkeringbell I did choose to skip on one nomination opportunity. I am growing older and taking on more real life responsibilities as well. Now is a time I think I have got a bit of grip on my real life, and I can now find more time for online life. – NVZ Jun 16 '19 at 12:17
  • NVZ I believe she was referring to your recent absence, she wasn't questioning your account's age on IPS. Plus, if you can't handle "power-hungry", I'm not sure you're entirely fit to handle the foul-mouthed fellow who would create a sock-puppet to upvote themselves. FWIW, I think you can make a better case by answering the questionnaire. (Just a bystander here, and I cannot even vote, but this comment thread didn't seem to go in a pleasant direction) – M.A.R. Jun 16 '19 at 12:18
  • @M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ I can understand. You know me better I guess. :) – NVZ Jun 16 '19 at 12:19
  • @M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ I can handle being called anything by random users, but it's saddening that it's coming from her, a mod. It feels a bit as if she personally wants to bully me into withdrawing my nomination. And I donno what makes her dislike me. – NVZ Jun 16 '19 at 12:21

Hello, I'm Ælis and I volunteer myself to become an official IPS moderator. Here is my answer to the community questionnaire.

Why me?

  • Because I love this site, because I spend a lot of my free time in it and because I want it to become the best possible version of itself it could be.
  • Because I'm already doing a lot of moderation as a community mod and because I believe I'm doing a great job at it.
  • Because I believe I could do even more as an official mod with more tools and powers.

Why not me?

  • If you don't like the moderating style I'm currently using, you probably won't like me as an official moderator.

  • If you believe someone else would do an even greater job as an official moderator, you should vote for them and not for me.

  • I've been keeping tabs on IPS even when my visible activity has been low for a while. You have done a great job so far. Wishing you good luck! – NVZ Jun 17 '19 at 4:57
  • I think Ælis would make an excellent moderator here. The key qualities are all there: intricate knowledge of the site and its policies, a good rapport with the community and a good grip on judicious use of tools. The field makes it hard to decide for the first choice, but you definitely have one of my votes. – mag Jun 17 '19 at 6:56

Hello, my name is Rainbacon, and I'd love to be the next moderator on IPS because I love this community. I've answered the community questionnaire and I am happy to answer any other questions you have either here or in chat.

Why me?

  • I care deeply about this community and want to see it be successful
  • I like to think that I'm fairly good at helping users polish their questions
  • I know that my interpersonal skills aren't perfect (that's why I'm here) and I welcome feedback from anyone who feels that my interactions could use some improvement
    • I promise that I will listen to any and all constructive feedback that you have
  • I am on the US East Coast timezone, so I'll be able to provide coverage for times when EmC is often modding alone.

Why not me?

  • I'm getting married in a month, so I probably won't be as active for the first month or so after the election
  • Glad to see your nomination! One point for voters to consider: It's nice if mods can work in teams and there's definitely always a bit of time when EmC is alone, so having another mod in the US East Coast timezone might actually be more of a pro than a con. Even though it's not the most active timezone now, eventually we're trying to build a community, and need people that are online at that time too, and they are going to need moderating too :) – Tinkeringbell Jun 11 '19 at 13:33
  • Adding to what Tinkeringbell said, when I was a mod, having two folks on EST worked out fine, and given the current geographic distribution of mods, there aren't many gaping holes to fill, if I remember correctly. – HDE 226868 Jun 11 '19 at 20:41
  • @HDE226868 Tinkeringbell I've moved that bullet point to the list of pros since you've both mentioned that it could work more in my favor than against – Rainbacon Jun 11 '19 at 20:45
  • @Rainbacon I got married recently, and it feels great! Wishing you the best - on your marriage, and on your nomination. – NVZ Jun 17 '19 at 5:00
  • I will say the same thing for you and for avazula: I know you, I know how you moderate and how much you care and I know you would make a fantastic mod :) – Ael Jun 17 '19 at 8:15

Questionnaire answers

Hi there! I'm avazula, and I'd like to nominate myself for IPS' 2019 moderator election.

Why me?

  • Building an inclusive community is very important to me. I try to be as welcoming and helpful to new users as possible.

  • My activity on IPS is steady and diverse, be it about reviewing queues, flagging, contributing to meta whenever I can, fine-tuning IPS comment bot or writing answers implying non-violent communication.

  • Having been around for almost two years, I have seen the site evolve and understand the need to always question my actions and thinking

Why not me?

  • English is not my mother tongue and there may be idioms that I struggle to get sometimes.

Outside of SE I'm a DevOps engineer in the healthcare industry; I'm also a singer, a beekeeper and a Medium writer.

  • You have been around for almost as long as I have, and I can rest assured you are a good candidate based on my past experiences with your posts. Good luck! – NVZ Jun 17 '19 at 5:03
  • I will say the same thing for you and for Rainbacon: I know you, I know how you moderate and how much you care and I know you would make a fantastic mod :) – Ael Jun 17 '19 at 8:15

This election is complete.
