My mother often yells: “I’m a horrible mother. After everything I’ve done for you this is what I get. I don’t know why I am being punished. I should’ve enjoyed my activities instead of taking you to different classes, just like other mums did. Now their kids are better, happier and smarter.”

She’s upset almost everyday about very small things. If I leave hair on the comb and not clean it - it will get her very upset. My opinions are not the same as her and it upsets her greatly. I make many mistakes, but I wish she realized that I really try hard. When she’s doing something I try asking her if she needs some help but she’ll usually say she has so much work she doesn’t know where to start.

I’m a 21 year old student. I’m self financing and studying in a different country for 3 years already. I love my family so much and I’ve decided to spend the whole summer with them, but almost every week there will be a big fight that leaves me crying. I don’t know how to handle this. Maybe I’m not showing enough of love? I really, really love her.

I told her once how we never have any other conversations, other than her parenting me. She said it’s pointless when she sees I don’t know how to take care of myself.

Can someone please help me? Whatever it is that I do, she will get upset and I am out of ideas. I am thinking of leaving, not because of all of the yelling per se, but rather because I am writing my bachelor thesis and on top of that I have other activities I need to work on, all of this stressing me out and leaving me with little time to work on.

All of this is very painful for me and perhaps my character flaws are the reason for this, so feel free to ask any questions you might think help answer this, I will provide additional information.

All advice on how to fix a relationship with my mother is greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

This question appears to be off-topic. The users who voted to close gave this specific reason:

  • "Asking "What should I do?" is off topic. - Questions should ask for help achieving a specific goal. Your question is asking for personal advice on "what to do" without defining a goal; this is too subjective. Edit your question to explain what you hope to achieve and how you would like to interact with the others involved." – Flo, sphennings, TheRealLester, BFG95, Lord Farquaad
