Estrangement is

the loss of a previously existing relationship between family members, through physical and/or emotional distancing, often to the extent that there is little or no communication between the individuals involved for a prolonged period.

Estrangement most commonly occurs between family members when one is either not physically present or not emotionally available to the other.

Examples:

  • a parent who has lost contact with their child as the result of a divorce
  • a sibling who was cut off from their siblings after being kicked out of the house by their parents
