OP should not, under any condition, be required to leave his own house in order to accommodate a not-so-welcome guest. Otherwise, if OP lived elsewhere and was just visiting his mother's house, then your suggestion would be appropriate.

It is a fact that Jane D doesn't talk politics with my mother when I am not present.
