Oct 28, 2017 at 9:44 comment added JohnLBevan It sounds like you're closer to the husband than the wife. Taking it up with him may allow you to be a bit more candid / make your thoughts clear, then have him broach the subject with his wife. Depends on the individuals' personalities & the relationships within the group.

Oct 27, 2017 at 8:39 comment added Xander @AnneDaunted I looked over the contract and technically he can't fire her without my consent. But if words reach the housekeeper's ears that she's not wanted, she will leave for sure. I just want her to be comfortable and wait her retirement in peace.
Oct 27, 2017 at 8:34 comment added Xander @JarkoDubbeldam I've already tried to find the key for that door but I had no luck. Need to replace the whole lock probably but since this is a very old house, it's tricky. That door alone is probably 100 years old. But it's a solution if push comes to shove.
Oct 27, 2017 at 8:29 comment added user4788 She's worked for your family for over 20 years, if your friend can't understand the importance of that to you and explain it to his wife, there is a problem there. The house keeper isn't causing trouble, but rather being intruded upon, so it is unreasonable for them to try to get rid of her for you speaking up.
Oct 27, 2017 at 8:06 comment added Anne Daunted GoFundMonica So you and your wife own that house together with the other couple? Could the other couple fire the caretaker with your consent? There may be a legal issue involved, depending on where the house is (wanting one's privacy to be respected may not be a good reason to fire her and other means, like finding another reason, may be more troublesome/costlier)

Oct 27, 2017 at 7:58 comment added JAD Would getting a lock on the caretaker's quarters be a solution? It's not IPS related, but it might help against using it as a shortcut.
